The disappointment of a Conor fan

I’ve never been much of a sports fan.

Sure when I was growing up I was forced into playing sports by my parents for team building exercises.

I played football from a very young age. You think if you’d played football from age 5 to 14 you would have some sort of knack for it, well guess again.

I then moved onto tennis which is a sport I actually really enjoyed, but once again I was never interested in watching it. Sure if Rafa was playing I would watch, but I wouldn’t spend every waking moment before the match discussing the possible outcomes, who would do what etc.

I live in New Zealand, the greatest country in the world, but also a country that just so happens to be besotted with Rugby. I was never a huge fan. Once again if we were in the world cup final I’d watch it, but I wouldn’t bother to watch any of the pool games. It was never interesting to me.

But 647 days ago that all changed.

I was around at my (world cup champ in Taekwondo) friends house. And he had bought UFC 207, Rouse vs Nunnes. I had never watched a MMA fight before. I remember the feeling of pure elation when Nunnes looked to kill Rousey in just under a minute. It was insane.

Ever since that moment I have watched practically every UFC card.

Every fight night, every PPV, most DWTNCS, a few Bellator’s thrown in too, and maybe even a sprinkling of cage warriors for desert.

I’m obsessed

I spend several hours a day browsing Twitter and Reddit looking for more MMA news. Who is fighting who, who will win, who is going to get the next title shot.

I love it with all my heart.

But

I had never seen a Mcgregor fight.

He had retired 255 days before I watched the greatest sporting event I had ever seen on TV.

I have watched every single fight on Youtube of his 100′s of times. Loving his stinger of a left hand, watching his taunts, laughing at his press conference Taunts; but that all changed on Sunday.

I have waited for UFC 229 for nearly a year. I would wake up each morning hoping to jump on Reddit aand see the fight announced and scream in pure elation.

In fact when the fight was announced, I made my partner get up early and watch the press conference with me. When I saw the promo from Dana I immediately started screaming and clapping in pure bliss thinking this war of fighters finally had a date where they would commence battle.

And then last night happened.

At no point in the fight did Conor even look slightly ahead. He cheated.

He grabbed the cage many times.

He grabbed Khaabib’s shorts many times.

He threw an illegal knee to the head.

He held Khabib’s gloves to prevent his grappling.

And still.

He looked like an Amateur . At no point did he look dominant. He looked like a child in the ring that had no idea what he was doing there.

Mcgregor let me down. All of the time I waited and waited for this fight. He never even seemed to train take down defense, train how to keep his massive range advantage.

No

He let his arrogance take over.

Fuck you Mcgregor. You’re a disgrace to the sport.
